Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Trauma Informed Pedagogy, and Decolonizing/Decanonizing the Curriculum

As part of our ongoing Inclusive Pedagogy programming, we invite you to join us for a semester-long discussion of various texts that engage with three cutting-edge social justice pedagogies: Anti-Racist Pedagogy, efforts to Decolonize/Decanonize the Curriculum and Trauma-Informed Pedagogy.

In reaction to ongoing social upheaval and racial violence in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been calls at a number of institutions to re-examine both the ways teaching and learning take place, as well as the content conveyed to students. An Anti-Racist Pedagogy encourages instructors to critically evaluate issues such as the voices highlighted in the classroom, how racism has shaped various academic fields and the ways in which power is negotiated in the classroom environment.

In a similar vein, efforts to “decolonize” or “decanonize” curricula call upon instructors to not only diversify materials and voices, but also to reframe curricula and approaches to knowledge, challenging the established “canon” in any particular discipline.

Finally, Trauma-Informed Pedagogy acknowledges the impact of great psychological stress on students and faculty and provides strategies to mitigate its impact and facilitate learning processes.

Our group will explore all three of these social justice pedagogies, discuss the state of the field as well as current debates, and learn about resources and strategies to better serve students. Our aim in these discussion sessions is to help faculty, staff, and graduate students attain the tools needed to create more inclusive classrooms and support a wide range of students.

Space is limited. Applicants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
